If your BIOS sees the drive at all, you don't have the conventional BSY problem.

Ehhm, sorry to say but, a) not all drives which are trapped in BSY state vanish from BIOS detection rght away. These drives freeze the system by sending a BSY message over the BUS all the time. Hence the name BSY bug. And b) of course this is not a normal case, as my drive is detected as something it is not, due to the wrong firmware that has been flashed.

AFAIK, SD35 firmware was not publicly released to the field. I suspect that ES.2 drives are just 7200.11 hardware with tweaked 7200.11 firmware. Does this sound plausible?

It would if it wasn't also explicitly detected as 7200.11 (ST31000340AS). So this SD35 firmware wasn't ever meant to be flashed to a ES.2 drive, if that's what you meant. ;) I have the suspicion that someone tried to flash his 7200.11 1TB drive under Windows and also had the 1TB ES.2 drive connected. Perhaps the flashing software had no model check and the person just selected the wrong drive. BAM, "dead" (at least ATM) ES.2 drive, due to wrong firmware.
Anyway, I'll just keep the drive and maybe one day I'll find a way to get it back from the dead. Will do further research on this, everytime I have some free time. Quite interesting subject anyway.

Seagate Swap Smaller Drive into 1.5 TB External FreeAgent
Dropped the drive onto the floor. Ooops, that was my backup. I've bought another and am backing up my internal drives now. However, I'd like to use the external case. I removed the 1.5 TB and stuck it into my PC to verify that it's dead; it is. Then I took a working 160 GB Seagate out of another PC which was working, and installed it into the external USB 2.0 enclosure. The drive spins up but is not "seen" on Windows XP, Windows 7 nor a Mac Snow Leopard.
I guess that the USB controller either died with the hard drive or perhaps it can't handle the small drive. Any ideas on which is more likely?
Thank you.
Hexedited HDD.. how to get it to factory??
Hello,
I am trying to get my Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB recognized by an Xbox360 Tool for windows! For that task, i had to play around with winhex to manipulate some offset values!
after doing this everything was fine! the prog found the drives hidden partition and all, but it was the wrong one, back at winhex, I calculated to where my Fat/Start offset is and edited it, but edited it wrong. After trying to format it in the xbox it tells me theres a problem and aborts the opperation. back in Paragon it deletes the partition but when creating a new one it take about 1 min, to finish the task.. back in 360 the same prob. persists....
My question now is...
What can i do to totally scratch the drive to normal/factory stage???
Do I have to just LowLevel Format the drive to clear my hexing bads??ß
Thank you for everything that helps!!

**SOLVED**
The Low-Level-Format did the Trick!!!!

S.M.A.R.T Problem
Hi
I was wondering if anyone of you HDDGurus could help me out a bit and explain me some things.
I have a Maxtor 6Y160P0 PATA disk, I remapped approx. 1500 bad sectors with MHDD.
But still my BIOS says smart status "BAD" and my Win7 tells me my HDD is going to fail.
I was wondering why isn't the smart table updated?
And what can I do? I've scanned the drive after the remapping of the sectors and I've got no bad sectors anymore so what do you guys think?
Just ask if you need more information and I will provide it asap.
ps. I've got NO important information on this disk so it's just a little project of my own ds.
Bad sectors are not the only source of smart errors. Have a go with HDDscan, and New back any issues found. That would be a far better representation of your problem than already provided. It would also cause a lot more members to chime in with their opinions. If it is still under warranty just send it back. Dealing with IO controls, buffers and that random structure that may be sent back on the wrong command: I can tell you that you are traveling a VERY rough road.
HDDScan smart info!
I'm not interested in sending back my drive, just want to learn what I can do about such problems
do you want me to do a surface scan?
if such read or verify?

Hello,
your drive had a lot of unreadable sectors in the past, and with rewrite, you have re-allocated all until the G list is filled with these.
But because you have beginnig of bearing problem or a little weak head, you can re-fresh the sectors with writing, but some of these will be apear as bad again soon.
This is why the smart shows failed status. (exactly beacuse the G is full)
This drive crys for SS.
If it will survive you will get a quite good drive, but if fails, then wants to fall to the trash box. :D

HDD seen as Cd Rom
I dont know the problem, but my hard disk is seen as a cd rom. I have tried on multiple computers, and it is the same on all of them. Tried changing the drive letter too, but no success. Means the letter changes, but still the drive is seen as a cd rom. I cannot format the hard disk. I used to use it perfectly till some time back, but this is happening recently ( 2 to 3 days). It is a Toshiba 80gb disk, and since the warranty period has passed away, i dont see any point in taking it to the support guys. Can someone please help me?
Could u specify your Drive Model.
I do not know the drive model or any other details, it is a toshiba 80 gb
I've had this issue.
The problem is a CD that has been cramed into the hard drive.
Tricky but you need to take the CD out of this hard drive before it suffers some kind of damage.
These are typically music cd's distributed on cable TV "90's Rock Ballads" and the like.
I've found 2 drives with "50 Power Jams!".

I'm located in Ohio, US. Would one of you direct me to a person or company that can recover data from a Seagate 7200.7 ST3160021A. After google'ing various companies...I'm just not comfortable picking one out randomly.
The prices of several of the individuals on this board are within my price range...but they are always located overseas (not sure if that is a problem or not). Can someone point me to an exact company or person that will evaluate my drive. I just can't bear the thought of picking a company at random.
Sincerely,

i365 is owned by Seagate, so if anyone could do it I bet they could.
Granted your top-tier recovery companies are probably going to be more expensive.
You don't have to backup all of your data, just the data you want to keep.
Quote:

And that is the problem I'm having... for many people (like myself)...the data may be worth a few hundred+ dollars. But I can't imagine many people spending thousands of dollars on pictures and school papers. For a business...data recovery is a "no brainer"...but it's very hard to get a recovery service to give you a hard number. I understand the reason for this...but it doesn't make it any easier as a potential customer.
As for me, I just want to give this as a gift to someone (old pictures they thought they had lost)...but I just can't afford to spend thousands of dollars it. Thank you for the pm's I've received...I'm going to send the drive out and see how it goes.

insight on a hitachi HDT721064SLA380
Whoops i did a hot swap on this drive, and it wont work anymore. I assume I fried up the circuit board.
From what I have read, I wont be able to just swap a circuit board from another drive.
Does this board have any fuses i may have blown?
Any idea what it would cost to get my data recovered?
Hi,
You shouldn't hotswap Hitachi drives, and besides that, if you don't have the proper knowledge, you shoudn't swap any drive.
Best thing is to talk with a data recovery company and send them the drive in for diagnosis purposes.
I have a feeling, your PCB still good....
You have fried the preamp chip instead as usually happens...
You have doubled the original price.
Janos
Well you have just made it a bit more difficult now.
With some Hitachi drives, when you hot-swap it transfers Cyl defects from donor to patient. I'm not sure if this drive is affected as I have never tried hot swap on Hitachi as it is not usually necessary. It is possible to revert to original Cyl defects, but you will either need expensive equipment or some professional help.
What would help us diagnose is - did you send sleep/standby command before the hot-swap or was the drive still spinning? If it was still spinning it would explain why the board fried.
???????
The car in front (doing 150 MPH) is a Toyota
i plugged it into a the power bus that was turned on, (that what i would call a hot swap) so it was in an off state and never came on, as it blew some circuitry.
Ok. I think definitely you should contact a company in order to fully diagnose the drive and give a proper price for it.
I found D3 zvs? shorted. desoldered one end of it and i am getting my data off the drive. The search button was so helpful. Thank you
Indeed, there is two hotswap meanings being implied here:
SATA can be "hotswapped" by being plugged in to a PC with power activated, well...most.
And then there is a DR hotswap
Totally agree with dmarques !.!

I lifted one end of the shorted diode off the circuit board. there was no need for professional recovery, even though a few people think it is necessary. in my opinion, that rates right there with telling me to get pc3000. my main question was is there a fuse? question never answered, just a bunch of send it to a pro.
I found my answer via search. so to the Newers in the threads i found while searching thank you.
I dont need professional services on this drive, thanks for the solicitations though
Well, in your case it's true it was a simple one, lucky you are.
But first, it could be not that simple. And second, you found the answer because probably some pro Newed it.

Greetings Everyone!
I need help. My Western Digital HDD stopped working, it does not power up. I can feel the PCB getting hot in one area on the board so I'm crossing my fingers that it's just the PCB and not an internal drive issue. The lock is the least of your worries, the drive is dying anyway.
PC Image Data Recovery

the smart warning wasnt there before i used hdderase and the hdd locked.
That would make sense, because secure erase will write 00s to every sector, which means it has to pass every sector. So as it is doing this it begins to run into all of the bad sectors that it may not normally run into during normal drive operation (assuming your not using very much of this disk) and begins the reallocation process; eventually over the course of the erase it hit enough bad sectors to trip the SMART, which predicts failure.
The data must not be valuable if you where erasing it, new HDD time.

Help using external Harddrive Enclosure
Hi I have a faulty Laptop, and I have some important data I need to recover off the harddrive. I have purchased a external enclosure to plug into my PC. I have done this and the PC has rocognised the harddrive. However when I go to open it, it says "reformat this drive" when I click no it doesn't do anything and when I click yes it says "all data will be errased".
How can I enter the drive to retrieve my files before reformatting?
My harddrive is a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 and I am using a Iomak 2.5 inch sata Hard Drive Enclosure.
Thanks Steve
Try with any Data Recovery software u can find free software in this site try with that.
Assuming it's an NTFS drive, I used NTFS Recovery by Diskinternals. It's $99 but worth every penny. I used it to recover and over-chkdsk/r-ed hard disk and recovered all the data off it, including the OS and deleted files. In my case, it ran for about 22 hours (in an external USB case) on a Quad-core Xeon, 16Gb machine. It didn't seem to wanna do much after 12 hours on a 3.6, 4Gb EM64T machine. Not saying it wouldn't work but seems like the additional horsepower got the job done. Check it out:
http://www.diskinternals.com/ntfs-recovery/
Almost as invaluable as MHDD
I have tried to looking for a program, (Pandora Recovery), and it keeps "not responding" whenever I go near it? Any program in particular I should be trying to use? Or is there another way to access the data on the harddrive?
Honestly, you may be sending this drive on it's death roll. These 5400.3 are notorious for basically committing suicide.
Is the firmware version 3.CAE or 7.01?
If so I would advise a professional, if the data is valuable. PCImage is close by you.
Try a trial version of R-Studio and see if it will see anything, but again it's risky with this drive as it may have suffered a head crash, etc.

Although it powers up - it clicks about 5 times then the hard drive powers off, and no notification comes up on the laptop at all regarding USB drive. when I goto manage drive in windows again not even coming up as damageds or unknown format.
At this stage is it completely dead as I can't use any utils to detect the hard drive at all. What are my options?

Your drive is completely dead now.
Only in special laboratory can resurrect.
If your data is important, don't force the drive to spin more, because the conditions gets more worse...

yes,
probably heads/preamp is gone. This alone is a reason to send the drive to a pro, but it being a WD actually requires some more skill than other brands.
U may contact PCImage for example, he is in the UK, or we are also able to help in this situation.

Like Data Recovery lab (mumbai) and Janos say, almost certainly head related problem.
We are having good success in WD drives than many in UK, they are certainly more difficult to work with due to alignment issues. Assuming no serious platter damage then we can almost certainly recover for you.

WD as you know is the hardest drive to fix. Sucess rate on this drives is not very good. A special tool is needed and knowledge of the usage is required in order to perform this type of work. I have researched this drive and have the knowledge to repair it with complete sucess rate. The only drives that are non repairable are ones with a head crash on the drives. If you are interested in having your data recovered then send me a PM. I will guarantee my work and recover your data for you. I don't know, but my guess would be that since you move the platters and you don't have a site code match you will also need to move the HSA. Maybe someone else can clarify things with more certainty in regards to motor match.

This definitely looks like the typical 7200.11 busy error ...
2 choices:
1. No valuable data on the drive:
If you are under warranty - have the drive exchanged for free
If no warranty left - buy a new drive
or
2. Valuable data on the drive:
Look for a DR company offering the 7200.11 repair.
As you do not state which country you are from - cant give you a suggestion about
a DR company in your area - perhaps you add this info to your user data ... would
be nice to know that.

A Fun New Challenge (For me anyway)
First off, I want to say thanks to all of the helpful people here. As I am reading through the ATA spec, I had a few questions I was hoping on of you all mighty gurus could help with.
Refering to the attached picture and related to the Read Sectors command, am I right by saying
that
1x2 - 1x3 is the number of sectors (744)
1x4 - 1x6 is the starting sector (196832)
Or point to a specific reference regarding the offsets?
Thanks

So as I experiment further, I am finding that x2 is the count and 3/4/5 are LBA. Sound right?
2 is length
3,4,5 and 4 bits of 6 are LBA
My hobby is numismatics - http://coins.zoxt.net/
so x1 is specifically used for what? The words are identified as an offset from 1? where does 6 come into play? I promise this will be the last question on "this" subject. Thanks again for eveything!

x1 is the number of sectors to read.
3,4,5,6 are the start LBA
Look at the ATA specs .. They will explain the registers in all modes, CHS, LBA and LBA48

External NTFS HDD suddenly appears as FAT 32 folder - help
Hi everybody,
I have a strange problem with my external hard disks. All of a sudden they dont appear as hard drives anymore, but as folders named pendrive, with a fat32 file system.
Image
This goes for both my external hdds, a medion drive n go and a freecom 500gb hdd. I know for sure both are NTFS, because I used them to store dvd movies. If I try to store a dvd now, it says files cant exceed 4gb.
I am using XP professional on a toshiba laptop.
If I try to open the folder by double clicking, the following error is displayed:
Image
Translated, it says it cannot find file RECYCLER\S.....\Anit.
I can open the folder by right clicking and selecting explore. All my data is still there, and still available.
If I plug either hdd in my work laptop (Lenovo T61), I get the same problem, except that I can double click the folder icon to explore the drive.
When I check the properties, it is still (correctly) called freecom hdd, eventhough it is shown as pendrive in my computer.
Image
I have looked around a bit and attempted to fix the problem myself.
I tried converting fat32 to ntfs by using command CONVERT E: /FS:NTFS but without result.
I also tried test-disk win, but this did not fix it either.
I checked the volume for errors but this did not help either...
If I check system recovery settings, the hdd is displayed correctly - as a drive and with the correct name.
Image
I am sorry it became such a long New, I am not quite sure what info is relevant so I tried to include as many details as possible. If someone could help me this would be great !
Thanks for reading!

You could use Microsoft's UVCView to examine your USB devices:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/USB_ID ... ew.x86.exe
You could also use Microsoft's Sector Inspector utility to capture the "MBR, Partition Table(s) and Volume Boot Records for every disk connected to your computer":
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/SecInspect.zip
Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt which you can then upload to a file sharing service so that we can examine it.

Hi fzabkar
Thanks for your reply!
I have used the tools you described to create the log files - http://drop.io/HDDissues.
For both the Freecom HDD and the Medion HDD I have created logs using UVCview and SecInspect. I hope you can do anything with it, to me it´s abacadabra..

I have taken the liberty of reNewing your data on my own web space to make it easier for others to access:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/Randje/
I hope you don't mind.
Anyway, both your external devices identify themselves to UVCView as "Mass Storage USB Device Interface Class", which means they should be assigned drive letters by Windows. I don't understand why they show up as Pendrives, though.
Sector Inspector finds three drives.
PHYSICALDRIVE0 is your boot drive. It has a 79.8 GB NTFS partition (type 07) and a small 263MB type 88 partition. The following URLs suggest that it may be a HP QuickPlay partition or "Linux plaintext partition table":
http://www.ozzu.com/mswindows-forum/won ... 73477.html
http://www.win.tue.nl/~aeb/partitions/p ... pes-1.html
Both the MBR and NTFS boot sector appear to contain original MS code (English).
PHYSICALDRIVE1 is your Drive-n-go. It contains a single 500GB "WIN95 OSR2 FAT32, LBA-mapped" partition, type 0C, with no MBR code, and an MSWIN4.1 FAT32 boot sector, also without code.
PHYSICALDRIVE2 is your Freecom HDD. It contains a single 500GB partition as above, type 0C, but with MS MBR code (English). The boot sector is an MSWIN4.1 FAT32, with German boot code.
So it appears to me that your are mistaken. Both external drives do indeed have FAT32 file systems.

Need to recover my documents folder from a reformatted hdd.
my documents folder did not get backedup. the reformat was a quick reformat of xp. I am tring to get back my hawx gamesave file. I know it seems stupid but I have never recovered anything so I just wanted to try.
I have used recuva and getdataback. I have just fallowed the basics with both programs.
I did just a little downloading before noticing the folder was not backedup, maybe about 30MB.
Any ideas would be great I have never done this successfully before and I wold realy like to learn how.
Use one of the following softwares u will recover all your files:
1-DOC regenerator
2-Power Data Recovery
3-Magic recovery
Do not work on your HDD. Back up the drive to another HDD. Then when this is done you can use a program such as getdata back for NTSF or FAT. Make sure which one you have. You can also use USF explorer to do this one with. If you do not find what you need then you might of over written this after format and reinstall of your programs.
Iorana Haraharaini
tried gtdata back, no luck. It recovered the my documents folder but there were only a few files in there.
Any other software recomendations?
Wich is the best of the 3 listed above?
I use "Recover my Files", and I am very satisfied with it.
If you have already installed new XP and then some onto that drive, it is likely that the data just is not there anymore.
Most of the data recovery programs have demo versions which allow you to either preview the files (like ours), or copy a somehow limited set of files (like many others) off the drive, so you can just try them in turn to see if one works. There is a wide variety of the software actually available, incl. R-Studio, GetDataBack, Stellar Phoenix, also Recuva and Recover My Files had already been mentioned. Just do a Google search for "data recovery software" or like that.
However, avoid installing the data recovery programs onto the disk containing the lost files.

You don't have to backup all of your data, just the data you want to keep.
Wow that was quick.
Thanks :D you are the man!!!
Happy to help... already had that one out on my desk ;)

Thanks to forum user DrNJ for Saving my hard drive
Hope this does not count as spamming but just wanted to help any other forum users who have similar problems.
My new (less than 6 months) Hitachi TravelStar 7K320 failed without warning and I had some irreplaceable data including my LiveMail address book and a couple of virtual images on the drive. Turns out the problem was a bad PCB and I was lucky enough to find a matching one on eBay. I live in New Jersey and from reading this forum I found DrNJ so I took my patient and donor drives to his company. He was able to do the PCB and NVRAM swaps and I got my drive back so I'm now a very happy camper with a backup drive who has learned his lesson. The price was reasonable and service was quick.
Always good to hear.

WD Passport Essential PHD's
The following info may be common knowledge to some, but I got badly burned by not knowing it.
There are two versions of WD "My Passport Essential" Portable Hard Drives. They are entirely different products.
The earlier model (eg. WD3200ME-01) contains WD Sync software which synchronises files to other computers.
If you use WD Sync, thinking you are doing backup, you'll end up with hundreds of inaccessible encripted files, which are deleted if the original files are deleted. WD Sync is not a backup program.
This model has been abandoned by WD, and does not feature on their website.
The later model (eg. WDBAAA3200ABK), which is dimensionally slightly smaller than the earlier model - comes with WD SmartDrive software, which is purely for local backup.
My local computer shop only displays and sells the earlier version - Which is how I came to get burned.

Please New a model number. You will getter a more accurate answer after that.
You can try a simple Board swap and you may get lucky as long as the firmware matches
This would depend on the strength of the power supply which was connected in reverse and the path the current made through the electronics. If something shorted it out from the beginning, chances are that the head preamp survived.
hi,
yeah. it can be recovery simple if you just got PCB problem.

If your drive has a TVS protection diode, then it may be that all you need to do is to desolder it or snip it out with side cutters. Hopefully it will have sacrificed itself by going short circuit and thereby protecting the rest of the electronics.
If you have difficulty identifying the diode, New a photo, or visit Seagate's forums.
Thanks for the help and hope!

Yes, that's the culprit. If you remove it, then hopefully your drive will power up. Just be careful with your PSU, as your drive will no longer be protected.
For continued protection, a replacement 5V TVS diode, p/n SMAJ5.0A, can be obtained from Farnell, Mouser, Digikey.
Removed the diode and voila problem solved!
Imaged and replaced the drive.
Many many thanks!!

HP Proliant ML350
Good Day
i have HP Proliant ML350 Server it has RAID 5 Configured in SAS HDD's now it is showing logical Drives are Disable when i try to enable it one message appears "All data might be destroy" if i enable logical Drives i don't have any SAS connector to connect and take image or backup, RAID controller is Smart Array E200I if anyone how to solve it please let me know Thanks.
We've seen quite a few of these 350's with SAS HDD's with similar problems.
You need to buy a SAS controller and image the individual drives and rebuild with Winhex or your preferred tools.
Good Day
Ck Thank u for reply do u have any picture or link of that connector.
I use something similar to this...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dell-RAID-SAS-Con ... 2814wt_939
Thank You Ck.
You also need to ensure the SAS card you purchase is a Host Bus Adaptor and not a RAID controller, a SAS RAID controller will require you to initialise each disk before installing them into BIOS.
Good Day
Thank u HDDGuy could u send me any picture or link of that Card Thanks again for u r information.

I was hoping for a ide to usb cable with power some how.
Any help would be nice thx.
Hello,
I think your HDD is password protected, wich is automatically de-activated by the laptop's BIOS in the boot time.
This is bad news, because this is hardware protection, and you can't unlock your drive.
This problem requires special equipment to do this.
Seek for professional help if you want your data.
If you play with this hdd you can activate the security erase function wich will destroy the data forever.
ps: The password is in the SA in the platters, so PCB swap will not work for you, only makes more problems...
