Hi everybody,
This hard disk belongs to one of my friends. It has fallen and has a 'head crash' now according to data recovery place.
(but they don't do head replacement).
She does not want to repair the hard disk but needs her data back.
Please let me know if there is someebody on this forum who can help with this at a reasonable price.
I am living in Germany so somebody from Germany or Europe will be preferred.
Hard disk details:
Brand: Fujitsu
Model: MHT2040AT
Capacity: 40GB
Let me know if you need more details.
Thanks in advance

Hello
Toshiba MK4025GAS 40GIG
HDD2190 E ZK01S
The drive shorted out on connector lots of burning smell
Can the pcb be replaced easily with one from a new drive without a chip change if not which chip needs changeing ?
Can get a mk4024gas hhd2190 g zk01 s
Thanks
New subject: Re: Toshiba mk4025gas shorted on connector
PCB swap will NOT work on Toshiba HDD's as there is adaptive (drive specific data) on each pcb.
Modification work would be required, it has been discussed previously on this forum. Try the search box and you'll find more info.

hello ck i have done a search with this number mk4025gas and read all the threads please could you link to the correct one ?
thankyou
New subject: Re: Toshiba mk4025gas shorted on connector
This not needs any link.
In Toshiba, without the original and working pcb, you haven't got the reading adaptive parameters for recalibrate the drive nor the slip list.
Without these the recovery is extremely hard.

The connector plastic is burnt and pins lose any advise/help ?

What has it been connected to? 12V? IDC plug wrong way round?
New subject: Re: Toshiba mk4025gas shorted on connector
andrew2010 wrote:

I can't see exactly what happened, but it could be that the IDC pins were making poor contact, in which case the current may have cooked the connector due to ohmic heating in the high resistance joint.
Alternatively, you may have overvolted the PCB, in which case the TVS (?) diode D1 may have short circuited and caused an excessive current to flow. However, I would have expected fuse (?) F1 to go open in such a case. If you have a multimeter, set it to the 200 ohms range and measure the resistances of F1 and D1. If D1 is short circuit, remove it. If F1 is open circuit, bridge it with a wire link, or replace it with a picofuse (3A ?). Just be sure your power supply is OK because doing the above will leave your drive without protection. If you want to replace the diode, you can use an SMAJ5.0A from Farnell, Mouser, Digikey.
Here is the pinout of your connector:
pins 41-44:
http://pinouts.ru/HD/Ata44Internal_pinout.shtml
pins 1-40:
http://pinouts.ru/HD/AtaInternal_pinout.shtml
If you decide that you would rather replace the whole board, then you will need to transplant the 8-pin serial EEPROM chip at IC12 (?) from patient to donor. Before you do so, confirm the part number under the paper label.
BTW, I'm not experienced in DR, so I'm seeing your PCB for the first time. The pros will tell you to search this forum for answers, but what little specific information there is, is often impossible to find. Most of the News look like they've been hacked out in SMS-ese on a mobile phone keypad, so from that point of view they are worthless.
Anyway, best of luck.

Hello Shawn
I think the IDC plug may have been connected wrong eg pin 41 to 43
and pin 42 to 44 but not sure pin 44 or 43 was black & lose .

fzabkar thankyou for a detailed and comprehensive reply
I may wait for a replacement hard drive/pcb, which numbers have to match for a sucessful transplant of EEPROM chip at IC12?
How much would a Pro charge to recover data from this drive and how long would it take? This could be a viable alternative if all else fails.
Thankyou

I'm not experienced in data recovery, so that question would best be answered by a professional.
One other thing I would check would be whether the end pins are still making contact with the circuit board, especially the loose one. It may just be a matter of resoldering it.

I have been offered toshiba MK4025GAS HDD 2190 B ZE01 T and MK4025GAS HDD2190 C ZE01 S, which one would be the better match for EEPROM chip IC12 swap ? Can the donor eeprom be reprogrammed in situ and at what cost ?
Thankyou.

F1 the component below the F ? No beep on 200ohms setting.
D1 is that the large rectangle adjacent to the E1 marking ?

Why the rolling eyes ? Just wanted to confirm the donor drive codes and component markings. The components are very small, in some cases smaller than letter markings on pcb.
I am familiar with larger electronic components but this is first time on 2.5'' drive so am a newbie.

so one of my family decided to use a program to delete there hard drive.
but as they where doing the reformat the power went of in the house.
the drive in qeastion is a seagate ST9808211A MOMENTUS
it has got what it says a frozen password locked so i can not unlock it with pc3000
anyone know which pin it is to short out
so i can unlock this drive for them

I agree, password should still be possible to remove. Maybe problem is not ATA lock, but other problems causing problems with identification/interface which reports itself as ATA lock? I have seen some cases in the past where bad interface or bad PCB causes bad ID and ATA lock appears to be present....

How do I use it?
How to update the firmware of the wanted hard drive?
Thank you very much!

The drive has to be in full working order to apply the firmware.
It's a firmware UPDATE, not a repair.

I would advise you to avoid HDD Guru firmware downloads.
Instead, the most recent firmware updates are available from Seagate's web site:

There are Windows versions and CD ISO (FreeDOS) versions.
If your drive is suffering from the BSY bug, let us know.

New subject: Re: How do I update the hard drive's firmware?
Just connect it to your PC and see what will happen.
If detected normally ( with real capacity ) then your drive is (approx.) working fine, if not detected or detected but with 0MB then you have to fix your drive first then update the firmware.

Hi guys. i've recently bought a WD 500GB hard drive. IT works fast and cool (relatively, betweeen 35 to 41). But it makes an annoying sound while reading\writing data.
http://www.easy-share.com/1909109017/Hd ... 0noise.WMA 3.3 MB High quality
http://www.easy-share.com/1909109047/Hd ... ise56k.wma (For 56k users) 0.9 MB
Please listen to the recorded file and let me know if it's a broken drive. Please note that there is no distance between the hole on the top of the HDD and microphone, that's why it's so clear and a bit loud.
Some folks say it's pretty normal. That's usually what you hear when there is a read/write process. One guy said the heads are touching the disc, tough it wont damage the disk itself and the psu won't cause this; it lies solely in [b]the construction of the drive.[b]

What do you Guys think? Is this HD reliable?
New subject: Re: New WD Hard drive making grinding/scratchy noise (recorded s
Sounds abnormally scratchy - take it back. No hdd these days should be annoying to live with.
New subject: Re: New WD Hard drive making grinding/scratchy noise (recorded s
pixels, i did that, they said that's pretty normal, it's just reading/writing data.
Did they lie to me?
BTW, They are not an official WD branch. The dirve is made in thailand, not america. :?
New subject: Re: New WD Hard drive making grinding/scratchy noise (recorded s
IMHO this sounds not OK at all. A current hard drive should not emmit such a combination of scratching/clicking noises. That can't be healthy in the long run.
Seeking noises that most drives produce are OK, but this constant high frequent sound, even right after powering it on sure doesn't sound like it is normal.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they lied to you.
In the past I have found wd to have an annoyingly clicky head seek, but I'm sure their current drives are much improved in this regard.
But yours seems not only somewhat clicky, but to have an added intermittent high pitched squealy sound behind that. I certainly wouldn't put up with it or trust it.
You may find that many wd's are made in thailand, the ones I have are.

If you can keep your head when everyone else is losing theirs, maybe you don't understand the situation.
New subject: Re: New WD Hard drive making grinding/scratchy noise (recorded s
Ok, so the conclusion is that this is not a normal noise, and it needs to be fixed. Thank you for this information. But how? How can i fix this? What is causing this sound? Can anyone guess? Maybe i should ask an expert to do this. Because.....
..i'm not very good at fixing sensitive devices.

@ those who listened to the attached sound, can you explain what is causing that sound?
Hello everybody, this my first New in this forum. I would like in advance all of you will give me some hints.
After powering a WD5000KS enclosed in a USB external case with the power supply of a different USB case (having as I discovered later a different arranging of the 12v and 5v), the Western Digital 500Gb SATA HDD was burnt. I can clearly see (apart of some cracked components) even a PCB trace which is blown. Oboviously the disk is not even recognized by BIOS, does not spins when connected to power (and so on) but still full of my data...
I waited one year to find a donor HDD at an affordable price on ebay (10$).
Donor is
WD500ks-00MNB0
13-APR-2006
HBACAJAA
WMANU1148800
pcb (WHITE LABEL) 2061-701383-E00 AB XW3H11 2Y66 1 0007380 6387
pcb label on the side without components is 2060-701383-001 REV A and 04V-0
Receiver is
WD500ks-00MNB0
06-MAR-2006
HBACAJAA
WMANU1093539
pcb (WHITE LABEL) 2061-701383-E00 AC XW3H11 12RZ 1 0001350 6351
pcb label on the side without components is 2060-701383-001 REV A and 04V-0
As you see the receiver has a pcb white label with has an AC instead of AB and with 0001350 instead of 0007380, but the other labels are identical.
The ebay seller told me that the receiver HDD was dead but: 1) this disk is still detected by BIOS (so PCB is working, I suppose), 2) Partition Magic recognizes 4 partitions but any trial to delete them and reformat resulted in error #111117, so as the seller told, the disk is non working
I swapped the PCB and the receiver HDD now spins and I heard the heads moving a couple of times but is not even recognized by BIOS (the BIOS shows it with a empty label during startup and crashes when I try to manually detecting the disk entering in the BIOS). In other words, when I put the donor PCB on the donor disk, at least BIOS detect it and show a label (lot of numbers...) but when the same PCB is applied on the receiver, not even recognized (and also partion magic does not show it).
So my question is: the donor PCB+Receiver HDD could be not working due to a incompatible firmware issue or maybe the 12v-5v swap has blown even the receiver heads / preamp? In the first case maybe I can go on an try a ROM swap (I have some knowledge on electronics even if surface mount wothout the proper tools are a nightmare), in second case I have just to trow both HDD by the window.
Any suggestions are welcome. Clearly, the data inside the blown HDD are not worth the cost of a professional data resue.
Thanks.
Ettore

thats cool, but why, even if u got same DCM the hdd doesnt reach readiness, its alignment problem right?, but at some cases, even with different DCM , for example we got an case for recover data WD1200BB , and got an donnor WD1200BB the DCM was the most closest but when opened the head map was different, so searching find an WD1600BB different DCM, and after did the Head swap, the hdd reach readiness and was able to get like 70% of sectors then heads died again :(

Googeling for DCM I can across: 'Dark Cold Matter'
On two pieces of WD2500JB Caviar SE from 2006, I have two DCA codes:
DSCANTJCA and

Would the PCBs be compatible if I swap the ROM chip?
Are there people around who read and write the ROM in situ?

WD6400AAKS - BOARD SWAP?
Drive info:WD6400AKS
logic board imprint:2060-701537-003 REV A
logic board sticker: 2061-701537-E00 07PD3 XW 5N22 ADMF 2 0002170 9172
Has about 320GB data on it. ~2GB pictures (priority recover) ~35GB music (lesser priority) and the rest are DVD rips that are recoverable, just time intensive to re-rip.
Was being used in a USB external enclosure. Drive was working beautifully until about 2 days after it was knocked over while powered on (just from upright to prone position on shelf, no drop involved) Drive was powered on, but inactive when this happened. About 2 days later, started getting file access errors, later that evening quit recognizing entirely. I really don't think the drop was the cause, but I mention it just in case...
Connecting directly to SATA drive is not recognized either. Power cable only, drive clicks 6 times, pauses, 2 more clicks, then powers down. Removing the logic board, I do not see any burns or scorches, but there is a bit of browning of the foam insert right where the controller chip sets.
Finding another donor drive for parts should be reasonably cheap and easy. My question is:
What are the odds that a logic board swap would allow me to recover the data?
Would I also need to swap out the pre-amp inside the drive?
If it is worth the effort to do a logic board swap, what other drives use the same logic board, and would I need to switch the ROM also?
Or should I just call the drive dead and move on?
Thanks!

{Edited to correct typo in board sticker info...}
Swapping out logic boards will not repair your drive. The problem is in the drive and needs to have the heads changed out on this drive. The alignment problem for this drive is very difficult and requires a professional to do this work. I am located in Europe Greece and have the experience necessary to work on this drive. I have clients from all over sending me their WD drives to change the heads on and
recover data from them. If you are interested in a price quote or work on your drive please PM me and I will contact you for the work.
We have changed out over 70 WD heads in the last month and a half with 100% success rate on recovery. I had 3 drives with head crashes which can not be changed out due to the damage of the platters on the drives. I feel like your drive has suffered damage but considering it was readable for a few days after the fall this drive has a good chance of recovery.
I want to add , we don't use home lab or nylon clean-room and tools from ARIS .

disappointing...
Thank you for the advice. I will consider having a pro look at this. Quite honestly though, I will likely just cut my losses and move on.
Again, thanks!

Hi everybody!
I don't have the SCSI Tool from Ace yet, but I have a SCSI case with LBA 0.
Seagate Cheetah ST3300655LC - 300 GB
Is it possible to solve this without the SCSI tool???
If somebody can help me, please PM me.
Thanks
Seagate Cheetah LBA0 fault in case 4
1.Translator system corrupted, Smart error, G LIST error, about 80% (reported Sense key 03h "MEDIUM ERROR")
2.SA firmware zone has bad sectors , a single head bad about 3% (Sense key 02h reported "OFF LINE")
3.PCB failure, about 10% (Sense key 02h reported "OFF LINE")
4.Motor failure, disc scratching, head bad ,about 7%(Sense key 02h reported "OFF LINE")
case 1 use SRT repair (one key)

case 3 change ROM to good PCB fix it
case 4 Replacement Heads
SRT or SCSITOOL support models see PDF
The models did not support , need hotswap fix , take a compatible scsi driver

ST3250620A FW:3.AAD - Stops to initialize
Dears,
I have a problem with ST3250620A (FW:3.AAD).
PC3000 correctly shows the drive parameters during detection but after it I cannot access data.
The terminal shows that some sector could not be read. It tries to read that sector continuesly.
I try to stop the process with CTRL+Z, and when I put CTRL+C (reload cert code) drive starts reading data through 3-4 secs. After it the process starts from the beginning.
Unfortunately I cannot find suitable ldr for that drive, so can you help me with it?
I need ldr or some tricks to get data.
I will be very appreciated for help.
Regards,
Rafael
