If i wanted to take the disk to a professional, i would have done so already. 1. why do you want to upgrade firmware? 2. if you want a tool to do it google search 'acelab'. 1. The HDD sometimes behaves abnormally. When writing it starts a clicking sound and after that becomes unreacheble. After a spindown/spinup it works fine again for a while. 2. Guy's I'll explain for him on Swedish. Bosse Thank you for all the answers, in several languages aswell. Hi again, Of course we all know how to use it, but the thing is that your drive don't need it...your drive is failing and a frimware upgrade is not the solution. So bin the drive and buy a new one, and be happy that you had time to do a backup before the drive is totaly dead. Regards/ Bosse Thank you for your will to share your knowledge, and for knowing what's bwst for me. your drive have failing heads or surface problem. Any fw mod will be useless in this case Maxtor have a lot of calibration data in the modules, so if you write in fw from the link, your drive will be dead completely. This pack is only good for pros for using the modules as donors if needed and if the pro knows wich is for wich and knows exactly what he is doing. If you want to destroy your drive, using a hammer is an easyer solution. But if you really want to destroy your drive with fw updating, google for hddrepair Janos I know my drive is ****** up and I will throw it away, I promise. I just wanted to do some experimenting first, and hopefully learn something in the process. But now it goes in the bin! I have the same problem: the terminal session doesn't work. I have a Barracuda 7200.11, 500Gb, model ST3500320AS made in Thailand, with the "bad" firmware SD15. The drive doesn't get detected, even prevents a Gigabyte motherboard from booting at all when connected to the first SATA port. I didn't check, but I guess it's the busy problem. My laptop has a com port, so I used a serial cable, and connected RX, TX and GND to the drive following a diagram I found. I checked the connections using a cable tester, And I tried to short RX & TX to see if I have loopback. I'm using Windows 7 on my laptop, so I downloaded the Hyper Terminal 7 trial (I was used to it from using it in Windows XP). The settings I used are 38400-8-N-1 and no flow control. When I power on the drive with the connection enabled, I can't see anything on the terminal. I can type, and I get looback, but no command has any effect (I tried Ctrl+z and a lot of other things). I also never receive any message on the terminal window. I even tried with the PCB without the hard disk, with the same result. Update to my problems: I tried reversing the RX and TX cables, but all I got was trash. Sometimes a screen full of random characters, happens too when I try to write something. I guess I was connecting the RX and TX leads ok. I tried too with another computer. I digged a serial port bracket to connect to the motheboard of my desktop PC, and I got it configured. To try another software, I downloaded RealTerm. I got the same results as with my laptop & HyperTerminal. As I had another hard disk with the same problem (an ST31000340AS) I tried that other hard disk with the exact same result. I looked at some tutorials, and I tried putting some tape in the connector for the heads, and leaving only the spindle motor connected, same result. I'm getting out of ideas. Perhaps it doesn't run with a standard serial port? The USB serial ports everyone is using has something special my "real" serial ports doesn't have? I need to recover the data on those hard drives... I have found this page here that shows the schematics for connecting a serial port from a Seagate hard drive to a PC's COM port: http://Hard Disk Recovery Lab.com/content/en/articles/ ... schematic/ I guess what I'm trying to do doesn't work, I need that USB to serial cable or I have to make that thing on the schematics. Can anyone confirm this? Ok, at last I found my mistake. The serial port on the hard disk works with TTL voltages 0V & 5V, while the RS232 port uses -12V & 12V. I hope I didn't fry the hard disk serial ports. Tomorrow I'll buy a RS232 to TTL adapter and I'll try again. ============================================================================= Toshiba 80 GB drive reading half the sectors I have a Toshiba MK8026GAX drive that we got in for data recovery. The drive is detected properly and the DeepSpar read about half the sectors. There was a pattern to the good and bad sectors which seemed to mostly chunks of about 28,000 read sectors, then 28,000 unread sectors. I thought it would be a bad head, so a donor was ordered, and tested after it came in to be sure it is working properly. The drive is a 2-platter, 4-head drive ... so now I realize that 2 heads would be bad to only read half the drive. The head swap went well, but the drive is still failing on the same sectors as the original heads, and it can still read the sectors it could read before the head swap. I put the patient heads in the donor drive, and I let it run MHDD for a while and it didn't have any read errors when I stopped it at 20% of the drive. One other note: On many of the unreadable sections of the drive, it makes a "click-grind-click" noise when trying to image the drive. I left the platters in the drive, but I couldn't see any obvious platter damage on the exposed top platter surface, or from what I could see of the other platter surfaces. Any other ideas? You can send it to a pro or throw it away. _________________ Don't gamble with your data! Heads. If you are a DR company you can change them out other than this do as harddrivespeicalist said send it to another DR company who can. Sorry _________________ Iorana Haraharaini Maybe I wasn't clear in the original New, but I did swap out the heads. After the head swap, the drive was able to read the same sectors as it could before the head swap and still unable to read the same sectors it couldn't read before with the original heads. I put the patient heads in the donor drive and it reads the donor drive with the patient heads. So this confirms to me that the issue is not the heads. Here is the pinout of the SATA power connector: http://pinouts.ru/Power/sata-power_pinout.shtml You can remove the faulty diode(s) by desoldering it, or by snipping its pins with side cutters. ok..thanks my friend! i checked the diodes and the dead one is the left one! it says 00.7 and another is 282 ! so after i remove the diode, should i desolder left and right side of the pin on the hard disk to each other,or just leave it like that?? _________________ !!! MUSIC GETS THE BEST OF ME !!! Just remove it. Then your drive is not protected be careful when plugging it back in. If this works get your data and RMA the drive. If it does not work take it in to a DR company becasue you have more problems with the PCB or could be internal to the drive and the preamp is also burned. If this happens it is not a DYI job for you to handle and a pro needs to do it for you. _________________ Iorana Haraharaini i just removed both diodes ,and connect hdd to my pc,and it dodnt help! MUSIC GETS THE BEST OF ME !!! Now it is beyond you to fix this drive. If you take it to a shop they will be able to recover your data for you and the price should be reasonable. Without the proper tools to work on this drive you will not get back your data. You still have a good chance to get it back with the right shop. Just removing the TVS will not increase the price of your repair. If you continue on with DYI it will increase the price of your repair and you will pay 3 to 4x's more for this job. Search here on the forum for somene in your area and send him the drive and let him fix it for you and get back your data. _________________ Iorana Haraharaini hmm..i have brother in the Germany, and i saw on ebay a new hard disk like mine for 60euros...what if i buy a new one and change the whole electronical part?? do you think that can save the situation?? and is it hard to change that electronical part? _________________ !!! MUSIC GETS THE BEST OF ME !!! anyway i found this ,someone had the same problem>> Quote: Recently I bought 3 Samsung F1 750GB drives (HD753LJ). First one and 2 weeks later 2 more. They all worked perfectly, until I mounted them into an IcyDock 5-in-3 SATA backplane module. At first only one of the drives was recognized, later none at all. Other drives work without problem in the module. When I tried hooking up the 3 Samsungs apart from the module (= directly to the mainboard), they all appear to be dead. They don't even start to spin-up, no matter what I try: connecting with/without sata-data-cable, in a sata-usb docking station. Is it possible for three drives to die at the same time? Is there anything else I could/should try? Any chance of recovering my data before I RMA them would be great. As a last resort, I've tried taking the pcb off of a new drive and installed it on a broken one. Result: drive works perfectly (before that, it wouldn't even spin-up). I hope Samsung will be kind enough to send me a couple new pcb's ;-) jeeeej//:D i;ll buy a new one,and change the PCB..so now i need any instruction how to do that.! Is it hard to change it? _________________ !!! MUSIC GETS THE BEST OF ME !!! speedfreakz wrote: i;ll buy a new one,and change the PCB..so now i need any instruction how to do that.! Is it hard to change it? Before you buy anything, can you show us a close-up photo of the area around the diodes? The device to the left of the faulty diode may be a fuse. If so, then you can replace it with a 2A picofuse, or just bridge it with a wire. Otherwise, if you need to replace the board, remove the 6 Torx screws. Then take care not to damage the flexible PCB at the spindle motor. I don't know what kind of connector is used, but some have a sliding plastic locking tab. This must be released, after which the flex cable can be withdrawn with very little effort. You may have to change ROM in order to match another pcb with your drive and ROM is in BGA , which is PITA . ok..thank you for your patience, and your will for helping me to solve this! here are the pictures>> http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/6269/dscf0081c.jpg http://img192.imageshack.us/img192/7413/dscf0076b.jpg http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/4225/dscf0075y.jpg http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/6606/dscf0072x.jpg _________________ !!!
